Flight Review
To remain legal and current, every pilot must undergo a flight review every 24 calendar months. The clock gets reset each time you earn a new certificate or rating, but the currency period remains at 24 months. The flight review is generally conducted with a CFI. Its purpose is to ensure that your skills and level of understanding remain within the scope of your pilot certificate.This course is the perfect refresher. It will bring you back up to speed, and ensure that you are ready with all of the conceptual areas covered in a VFR fight review.

It depends on how long it has been. In the past few years, the biggest changes include BASICMED. This allows you to fly (under certain circumstances) without an FAA medical certificate. There has also been an increase in the use of GPS for navigation, including the use of tablets such as iPads. Most recently, a new service called ADS-B has been instituted. This provides traffic warnings, in-flight weather reports, and allows ATC to provide improved tracking. Further back, the FAA made modifications to weather reports and, in the mid 1990s, changed airspace designations.
The Gold Seal Rusty Pilot course is a complete Private Pilot ground school - without the quizzes and exams. It is designed to bring you back up to speed with all the current knowledge and skills you need for VFR flight.
This also depends on how long it has been since you were current and proficient. At the very least, expect a flight or two with a CFI, but only AFTER you have completed this course. If it has been over two years, a few more instructional flights may be necessary followed by a Flight Review with your instructor.
A flight review is a periodic training session to ensure that pilots remain current in their flight skills and knowledge comprehension. It is generally conducted with a CFI and is logged as dual instruction. At a minimum, it must include one hour of ground instruction and one hour of flight instruction. Successful completion of a flight review results in a signed and dated endorsement in the pilot's logbook. The requirement for a flight review can also be fulfilled by earning an additional certificate or rating. The regulation covering flight reviews is §61.56.
No. A flight review cannot be failed. It is a training session. The CFI may decide not to provide the required logbook endorsement. This is not a failure. It is still dual instruction. It simply does not result in an endorsement and does not fulfill the requirement for a flight review.
